Great gate for wider openings June 23, 2009 Judy Blue 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought this gate for a wide opening into our kitchen. The directions are easy to follow. Set up is a breeze. The tightening feature really secures the gate in the doorway. My 17 month old tries to climb it, but it holds up well. The mesh is nice and sturdy. I am 5'6" and have no trouble walking over the top. So far, it has held up well. This is a great gate for the price.
I LOVE this gate!! June 17, 2009 T. Stillions 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This gate is awesome!! I am using it for a home daycare so its gotten its fair share of abuse already and it has held up strong. I was worried that since its a "travel" gate it wouldn't be as sturdy as others but it really is. Its tricky to get it placed in a space that is 60" wide as my arms don't stretch that far but its possible to do it alone if you need to. The colors are very pretty and classic. Will blend into your decor nicely

We spent a lot of time running between stores buying and returning gates that did not work. It wasn't a question of price (though the cheaper ones were certainly more than subpar) we just wanted one that worked. Many of the gates we purchased said that they were wide enough for the space we had but they flimsy when stretched beyond a normal doorway width. Also, many of the gates with swinging doors had extensions to fit the doorway but one extension was always too small and two too big. The crosstown has a smooth sliding expandable frame that adjusts at the top and bottom. Also, it has tension mechanisms that fine-tune the fit at the top and bottom--if you have uneven molding or slanted walls, this is helpful. It is easy to take down several times a day and you can pack it and take it with you in its case. Awesome!! We also love that the gate is soft mesh so there are no injuries when my daughter rams her face into it repeatedly (hypothetically speaking). I will say it can be annoying when I have to lift my 4year old over it because it has no door, but the peace of mind and ease of use outweighs the minor annoyance. And, Amazon gave me a great price and it was at my doorstep the next day. Now I just need to return all the other craptastic gates I bought!!
Kitten Friendly April 26, 2010 Sherri (Madison, WI USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this gate to fit in a hallway for the purpose of keeping kittens contained. I obviously did not want anything expensive but fairly durable and wider than the average gate. It worked beautifully for the purpose I had intended and actually ended up surpassing my expectations by being the perfect gate after the kittens grew a bit. While they were very little, up to about 8 weeks old, they could not pass the gate. The mesh was perfect since it allowed my other pets to see and smell the kittens standing on the other side but could not reach them. At 9 weeks old when I felt that they were old enough to explore and meet my other pets, but were still unable to leap the height of the gate, the ones who were mature enough learned how to climb up the mesh sides, and with a chair or plant stand of some kind on the far side, make their way over to freedom. They simply climb back over when they want to return to their area. I keep it up because the kittens and mother can come and go, but the dog cannot enter.
Now...many reviewers complained about the difficulty of putting it up and down. It took less than 5 minutes to put up but I have never taken it down and moved it so I cannot say how difficult that is. I do have to step over it, often carrying something including kittens, but it is not overly high and this has not been a problem. HOWEVER, if it was in an area where I would be walking all of the time, and I did not mind spending the extra money, a door in the gate which opens and closes would be nice, especially if carrying a human baby is involved.
For the purpose I intended it has been a perfect gate and an excellent value. For use with puppies I could see it as being particularly effective since they, as far as I know, cannot climb vertical surfaces. For kittens up to about 8 weeks old it will contain them very well while allowing them to see and smell the outside world. I would recommend it for this purpose.
just right and no installation June 17, 2010 E. Willis 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
We purchased this gate after buying a metal one with defects that had to be sent back. We had already owned an older version of this gate for our older kids and decided to go with it again. The new model has more neutral colors (the old model was purple and white) and with a greyish mesh does not show dirt. It also has a more sophisticated opening mechanism (I assume because of changing safety standards). It holds in place well and expands to be used with many different sized openings, a big plus for a military family that moves to a new house every couple years. It also doesn't need to be installed and doesn't require any tools or holes in the walls. It's a great price for a gate that fits a wide space between rooms.
The downsides are not deal breakers in any way. Being fabric with a mesh gate area there can be snags that happen, our old one was used for several years and ended up with a handfull of small snags in the fabric over that time. The parts that adjust the size are now more involved and require the instructions be read to understand how to work it, the old one was easy to figure out. It's tall and must be climbed over. I'm 5'4" and I can just barely get over it. Our older kids, who are allowed to go in the rooms the gate is blocking off, cannot get over it and must be lifted over it or walk around through another part of the house. The old model had short sides that could be removed so the top bar could be put a couple inches lower but this one has built in locking sides so the height cannot be adjusted. It must be installed above the baseboards, which adds to the height.
